Media Express - Typography!

Taught by local artist, Kevin Jones: Kevin Jones is a freelance graphic designer, art director and type nerd here in Chicago, and has worked on major ad campaigns for ad agencies, record labels and publishers. His work has been featured in the Print Regional Design Annual, Graphics Poster Annual, among others.
In this workshop, you'll explore the anatomy of the letterform. Through discussion and interactive exercises, you'll learn how to classify typefaces, how use them effectively and learn the fundamentals of working with type in the context of graphic design.
The next Media Monday will follow the Typography workshop and be Graphic Design 101. Learn all the goods for free!

Community Portrait – Mural Class | fall 2011/spring 2012
The mural program, "Community Portrait: Establishing mural art in the Back of the Yards neighborhood", is an endeavor that aims to respond to the limited resources and opportunities for youth in the Back of the Yards community. The program introduces the history and practice of mural art to teens in the Back of the Yards neighborhood. The goal of this mural program is to provide an opportunity for youth to compose a visual narrative of their community as they see it. Pilsen Mapping - Digital Photo, Video and Website Design | fall 2011/spring 2012
Pilsen Mapping combines urban planning, grass roots mapping, and new media to create a diverse art making program for teens. The goal of the program is to have teens learn the history and growth of Pilsen to create several visionary maps about the neighborhood using graphic design, video, blogging, photography, and other new media. Teaching artists will provide workshops about urban planning and development, resources for teens (such as guest lecturers and field trips) to discover the story of Pilsen, and workshops about using new media (graphic design, digital photography, video) to help guide teens through the process of creation. The fall program will focus on data collecting and research, and spring will focus on the teens thinking and creating innovative ways to share their data with the public. Public Spaces - Silk Screen Printing | fall 2011/spring 2012

Public Spaces: Community learning through Silk Screen Printing offers youth the opportunity to produce inspirational posters for the Pilsen and nearby Chicago communities. Youth will create posters that explore positive statements and universal quotes. Youth will learn the art of silkscreen posters in the tradition and spirit of Jenny Holzer, Jose Guadalupe Posada, Robert Arneson, and 1960's counter-cultural rock posters.
