PAINTINGS

Yollocalli students have taken the various elements and principals of design that have been learned in previous courses and applied them to a new media, painting. Students took their prior drawing experience and painted several compositions. Combining their newly acquired techniques with color theory, students created several acrylic paintings. Several traditional themes like landscapes, still-lives, figure painting and many more were covered. Using all of these skills students were able to depict many ideas through personal themes.

RETABLOS

In this project, students combine history, painting and writing to learn about and work in an art form that comes from Mexican tradition-the retablo-a small painting which uses both image and text to depict a miraculous or important event in the life of the family. After learning fundamental drawing, glazing and painting techniques; composition and color principles; and narrative / descriptive writing techniques, students apply the theme of the retablo to their own life experiences. They capture an important event or feeling on canvas, and at the bottom of the painting, they describe the event in writing.
